Gruul’s Lair Raid Guide (TBC Classic Anniversary) – Maulgar Strategy, Shatter & Growth Tips

Gruul’s Lair is one of the two Phase 1 25-player raids in The Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary. Featuring two boss encounters — High King Maulgar and Gruul the Dragonkiller — this raid serves as a gear and coordination check early in TBC progression. While mechanically simpler than Magtheridon, Gruul punishes poor positioning and scaling damage over time.

Gruul’s Lair Overview

Phase 1 25-player scaling damage & positioning check.

  • Raid size: 25 players
  • Reset: Weekly
  • Location: Blade’s Edge Mountains
  • Difficulty: Entry → Intermediate
  • Key rewards: Tier 4 Shoulder Tokens, strong melee weapons
  • Boss count: 2

Attunement & Requirements

No attunement required — but tanks must be prepared.

  • Level 70 required
  • Recommended: Pre-raid BiS for tanks
  • Bring consumables (Flasks, Potions, Healthstones)
  • Solid threat generation required

Gruul is a scaling damage fight. The longer the encounter lasts, the harder it becomes.

Recommended Raid Composition

Strong tanks and balanced raid damage are key.

  • 3 Tanks (Maulgar requires multiple tanks)
  • 5–7 Healers
  • 15–17 DPS (Balanced melee + ranged)
  • Strong interrupts for Maulgar adds

Boss Strategies (In Order)

Two encounters: Council-style opener → Scaling DPS race.

High King Maulgar

A council-style fight featuring Maulgar and four adds. Each add requires a specific tank and control strategy.

🛡️ Tanks

  • Assign one tank per add
  • Spell Reflect Krosh Firehand’s spells
  • Keep Maulgar faced away from raid
  • Prepare for Phase 2 (Maulgar enrage at 50%)

🩸 Healers

  • Heavy spike damage on add tanks
  • Watch Whirlwind targets
  • Stabilize during Maulgar’s enrage phase

⚔️ DPS

  • Follow strict kill order
  • Interrupt heals and casts
  • Avoid Whirlwind
  • Spread during Phase 2

Gruul the Dragonkiller

A scaling DPS race where raid damage increases over time due to Growth. Positioning and Shatter management are critical.

🛡️ Tanks

  • Main tank center room
  • Face boss away (Cleave)
  • Manage Hurtful Strike (second highest threat target)

🩸 Healers

  • Tank damage increases every Growth stack
  • Raid healing after Ground Slam
  • Prepare big cooldowns after 8+ Growth stacks

⚔️ DPS

  • Spread 8+ yards to reduce Shatter damage
  • Collapse awareness after Ground Slam
  • Max DPS early before Growth stacks ramp
  • Manage threat carefully

Shatter damage scales with proximity. The further apart players are, the easier this fight becomes.

Positioning Diagram – Shatter Spread

Maintain spacing before Ground Slam to minimize Shatter damage.

        R H R

    M T M

        R H R

T = Main Tank (center)
M = Melee spread loosely behind boss
R = Ranged spaced around room edge
H = Healers spread between groups

Maintain 8+ yards between players.
After Ground Slam → reposition immediately.

DPS Benchmarks – Beating Growth

Gruul becomes exponentially harder as Growth stacks increase.

Every 30 seconds, Growth increases Gruul’s damage by 15%. Most stable kills happen before 12–14 Growth stacks. After that, tank damage and raid healing become extremely difficult to sustain.

Recommended Kill Window

  • Target kill time: 4:30 – 5:30 minutes
  • Safe Growth range: 10–12 stacks
  • Danger zone: 13–15 stacks
  • Wipe territory: 16+ stacks

Raid DPS Targets

  • Minimum total raid DPS: ~18,000–20,000
  • Comfortable kill DPS: 21,000–24,000+
  • Average DPS per damage dealer (15–17 DPS): 1,100–1,400+

If your raid hits 12 Growth consistently and tanks are dying, the issue is usually DPS — not healing.

How to Increase Kill Speed

  • Use Bloodlust/Heroism early (before 6–8 Growth)
  • Pre-pot and use second potion during burn
  • Minimize Shatter movement downtime
  • Ensure melee maintain uptime after Ground Slam
  • Optimize threat so DPS can push safely

Loot Highlights

Tier 4 Shoulder tokens drop here.

  • Tier 4 Shoulder Tokens
  • Strong melee DPS weapons
  • High-value tanking shields
  • Excellent physical DPS trinkets

Addons & UI Recommendations

Positioning awareness is everything in Gruul’s Lair.

Enable range radar or 8-yard WeakAura for Shatter. Most wipes come from poor spacing.

Gruul’s Lair is a classic early TBC DPS race. Execute clean positioning, control Maulgar’s council, and push Gruul before Growth overwhelms your healers.
